Nobel Committee Reviews Archives Over Alleged Jagland-Epstein Links
The review follows an investigation by Norway’s economic crime authority, Okokrim, which is examining Jagland on suspicion of aggravated corruption after disclosures in U.S. documents related to Epstein, reports indicate. Jagland, who chaired the Nobel Committee from 2009 to 2015, has denied any criminal wrongdoing and stated that he is cooperating with authorities.
The committee announced that it will now require current members to publish information about their positions, financial interests, gifts, travel, and other services that may be relevant to their roles. In addition, the organization will review its archives to evaluate how ethical questions were handled in the past, including in specific cases. Nobel Institute Director Kristian Berg Harpviken told reporters, “If we find serious matters in that review, it will also be something the public will know about.”
However, the committee clarified that historical documents will remain confidential in accordance with the 50-year secrecy rule governing its work.
These developments follow revelations stemming from Epstein’s archives. Epstein, who died in a New York City prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, had cultivated relationships with high-profile political and business figures around the world.
