Cashmere & De Gruyter Brill Partner to Bring Trusted Academic Scholarship to AI Platforms Safely and with Control

De Gruyter Brill to license its esteemed English content for AI inference through Cashmere's secure, governed infrastructure with full control and visibility

BERLIN, GERMANY, September 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Cashmere, the infrastructure platform that enables premium content publishers to safely monetize their catalogues for AI, and De Gruyter Brill, one of the world's leading academic publishers in the humanities and social sciences, today announced a partnership that will bring De Gruyter Brill's English-language books and journals into AI applications for inference use cases.

Under the agreement, De Gruyter Brill will license its catalogue through Cashmere's infrastructure, giving AI companies governed, controlled access to the publisher's scholarship while ensuring the underlying content is never used to train large language models. De Gruyter Brill publishes more than 3,500 books and 800 journals a year across the humanities, social sciences, and an expanding range of STEM disciplines — a catalogue with roots stretching back centuries, following the 2024 merger of De Gruyter (founded 1749) and Brill (founded 1683).

Cashmere's infrastructure is built specifically for premium-content publishers who want to participate in the AI economy without ceding control of their intellectual property. Publisher content is held within Cashmere's air-gapped infrastructure, which is SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR compliant, and is made available to AI platforms strictly for inference — never for model training. This allows De Gruyter Brill to determine which content is licensed, on what terms, and to whom, while maintaining the integrity of its authors' copyrights and citation practices.

The partnership also gives De Gruyter Brill and its authors access to Cashmere's business intelligence layer, which provides detailed insight into how content is being discovered and used across AI platforms. These analytics are designed to help publishers and authors understand real-world demand for their work, informing future publishing decisions and supporting the long-term sustainability of scholarly content creation in an AI-driven research landscape.

"We’re proud to welcome De Gruyter Brill to Cashmere. Their catalogue represents some of the most rigorous and trusted scholarship in the humanities and social sciences, and this partnership shows what’s possible when a publisher of that stature decides to engage AI on its own terms. Our job is to make sure De Gruyter Brill and its authors stay firmly in control — safely, with full visibility, and without ever exposing their work to LLM training," comments Jonathan Munk, CEO of Cashmere.

Ben Ashcroft, Chief Commercial Officer at De Gruyter Brill, adds: "De Gruyter Brill has spent centuries building a reputation for trusted, rigorously reviewed scholarship, and we intend to carry that same standard into the age of AI. Partnering with Cashmere gives us the infrastructure to make our content discoverable to AI platforms responsibly — with the safeguards, compliance, and insight into usage that our authors and institutional partners expect from us."

The partnership reflects a broader shift among leading academic and premium content publishers toward licensing models that keep copyright holders in the driver's seat as AI platforms increasingly rely on high-quality, citable source material. By combining strict compliance infrastructure with granular usage insight, Cashmere and De Gruyter Brill aim to set a model for how scholarly publishers can safely and sustainably participate in the AI ecosystem.
